ARFF Aptitude Test Sample Questions

1. ARFF Verbal Reasoning Sample Question

The ineptly titled "America Invents Act," S. 23 and H.R. 1249, currently meandering through Congress is likely to bring woe to small inventors and startup businesses that collectively drive the nation's economy. A key feature of the current patent system is the incentive for inventors to disclose their invention in a patent application in exchange for the possibility that they may achieve a patent grant in return. The subsequent publication of the patent application serves to inform the public about the invention, and thus enables others, including competitors, to build upon it. However, the new law would award the patent to the first person to file a patent application on the invention, rather than the one who is actually the first to invent. Another provision would eliminate the "grace period" that has traditionally allowed an inventor to get his invention "off the ground" without forgoing the opportunity to patent it.

The U.S. will lose its innovative edge in the world if the "American Invents Act" is passed into law.

Wrong

Wrong

Correct!

View Explanation

While the passage explicitly claims that the "American Invents Act" will take away inventors' incentives to file for patents and will hinder, not help, innovativeness, nowhere does the passage discuss the U.S.'s innovative standing in the world. Therefore, the answer is Cannot say.

2. ARFF Mechanical Comprehension Sample Question

Which ball will reach the floor first?

Wrong

Wrong

Correct!

View Explanation

Gravity is applied onto both balls equally, and the vertical distance they ought to pass is identical. The time needed for both balls to hit the ground is identical, regardless of the horizontal velocity component.
Therefore, it can be deduced that both balls will hit the ground at the same time.
Remember the physical principle: When an object falls under the influence of gravity, its vertical velocity does not depend on the horizontal velocity.

3. ARFF Spatial Reasoning Sample Question

4. ARFF Workplace Situational Judgment Test Sample Question

Samantha is having dinner with her fellow firefighters. She is the only female firefighter on duty tonight. It is Jack's turn to do the dishes. Once they finish eating, Jack turns around to Samantha and jokingly says, "Maybe you should do the dishes instead of me. After all, a woman's place is in the kitchen."
What should Samantha's first reaction be?

Wrong

Wrong

Correct!

Wrong

View Explanation

Best response: C
Competency: Cognitive skills (problem solving). Interpersonal skills (teamwork).
Explanation: In this scenario, a team member has disrespected a fellow firefighter. You need to decide what her first reaction to this should be.

The best course of action in this scenario is to tell the firefighter that his comment is disrespectful and inappropriate (response C). By immediately informing the firefighter that his behavior is inappropriate, he will hopefully be deterred from making these sorts of comments in the future. This response demonstrates high levels of interpersonal skills.

Ignoring Jack and the comment made (response A) is an ineffective response. Jack will not be made aware of his inappropriate behavior, and this will legitimize future behavior of the sort. This response shows a lack of problem solving skills.

Response B is not a good first response. Involving a supervisor at this point is too hasty, as Samantha has not yet tried to address this inappropriate behavior on her own. Involving a superior before discussing the matter with her fellow firefighter demonstrates weak problem solving skills. Additionally, taking this action as a first response would escalate the situation and damage the relationship with her team member.

Jokingly saying something as equally sexist to Jack (response D) is not a good response. This response could lead to an escalation of the situation. Firefighters work and live together as a team. Teammates should be respectful toward one another regardless of differences such as gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and religion. By saying something as equally sexist, Samantha would not only be disrespecting Jack but also the rest of the male firefighters on her team. This response demonstrates a lack of problem solving skills and interpersonal skills.
